"Vice Chancellor, it is my pleasure to read the citation for Rob Hammond for the award of Honorary Doctor of Business Administration.

Rob Hammond has had a distinguished career running local government services in Cambridge and London spanning thirty years.

He has focused on managing and leading councils to provide excellent public services, using public resources effectively to meet the diverse needs of communities. He is particularly passionate about creating a sense of community and ensuring that public services support underprivileged people.

Rob has just retired from the post of Chief Executive at Cambridge City Council to focus on a number of other roles.

He assumed the top position at Cambridge City Council in 1990. He was previously Director of Housing at the London Borough of Lewisham and he gained earlier local government experience at the London Borough of Camden.

Rob set out on his life journey with a degree in economics from the University of York and has worked as a development economist, a development adviser and university lecturer.

At Cambridge City Council he enjoyed the mix of the traditional and modern environments in which he worked. His vision of the City is of a place full of opportunities and a centre of growth for the region. One of his proudest achievements was seeing through the stunning city centre redevelopment at Grand Arcade.

His exemplary leadership and management skills have made him one of the top names within Cambridge, someone who is greatly admired for his drive to take on project after project, and for his ability to manage change and get things gone.

He is more than deserving of the City's thanks for his outstanding contribution over nearly two decades having made Cambridge - more than ever before - the ideal place to live, work and study.

He has channelled his energies into the lifelong development of public services and made an outstanding career for himself but rather than relax and retire he is gearing up to take on a whole raft of new challenges which will see him make further contributions to private and public sector services in the years ahead.

For working tirelessly to make Cambridge the successful place it is today, we at Anglia Ruskin would like to honour Rob Hammond with an honorary award. Vice Chancellor, it is my pleasure to present Rob Hammond for the award of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa."
