Born in London in 1938, Anthony Giddens is one of the most prominent sociologists of his generation. A graduate of Hull University and the London School of Economics, he completed his PhD at Cambridge in 1974. After teaching at Leicester University he returned to Cambridge and was later appointed Professor of Sociology. He has been a prolific writer, having published 34 books and over 200 articles, essays and reviews. He has also had a significant impact on UK and world politics, acting as advisor to Tony Blair and to numerous politicians throughout Europe, the US and beyond. He has served as a member of the Institute of Public Policy Research, and as Director of the London School of Economics from 1997 - 2003. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Science, and The Guardian newspaper has referred to him as "the most quoted sociologist of our time". He was made a life peer in 2004.

In 1994 Anthony Giddens was made an Honorary Doctor of Letters.
