"Vice Chancellor, it is my pleasure to read the citation for David Crowe for the award of Honorary Doctor of Education.

David Crowe is Headteacher of The Boswells School in Chelmsford.

From its beginnings as a secondary school for 1500 students The Boswells School has grown into a self-governing Foundation School which now features many new high technology departments and facilities, and has its own Specialist Performing Arts School and Sixth Form College.

The school, which serves the Springfield area of Chelmsford is proud of its co-educational comprehensive character and admits the full range of ability. There is a high staying on rate into the Sixth Form known as The Boswells College. Increasing numbers of Year 13 students are gaining places on degree courses at Universities and other Institutes of Higher Education.

What makes it special is that the governors, parents and teachers all work together to motivate students so that they not only meet but exceed their expectations and aspirations, proceeding from a recognition that schools are about people. Staff and governors at The Boswells School recognise that a first class education must be delivered to every individual student and that each must be happy to give of their best. The school's introduction of Adventure-Based Learning is just one example of recent curriculum innovation that is designed to deliver a meaningful and rewarding education to students.

David has encouraged a team approach within the school which sees all staff contributing to policy making and forward planning- a vision of leadership which enables everyone to play an active part. Students are encouraged to 'learn through experience' with many participating in clubs and activities based around sport, dance, drama and music production which helps with their overall educational development.

The Boswell School helps children to become young adults who take responsibility for their own education and prospects. It exudes a happy, hard working and purposeful atmosphere which has been created by all staff working together. As its Head David Crowe is proud of what the school offers to its students and the local community. Indeed, in many areas of its work the school is effective not just locally but nationally and internationally. Within Essex David plays a leading role amongst headteachers having been a Council and Executive member, the Treasurer and, most recently, Chair of the Association of Secondary Headteachers in Essex. He has also been appointed as a Local Leader of Education by the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services.

For his dedication to The Boswells School, for his services to education, and for being a pillar of the community we would like to honour him today. Vice Chancellor, it is my pleasure to present David Crowe for the award of Doctor of Education, honoris causa."
