"Chris Avraam has had a distinguished professional career, which has encompassed activities as a nurse, a researcher and a nurse educator. Christoforos Avraam is the Director of the School of Nursing in Nicosia, Cyprus. Since 1991 he has also been Chairman of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of the Ministry of Health of the Government of Cyprus.

For the last 30 years he has been involved in international fora and specifically has been closely involved in activities on behalf of and sponsored by the World Health Organisation. He has a distinguished record of voluntary service in his own community and on two occasions has had extended spells as President of the Cyprus Public Nurses Trades Union.

Chris Avraam has a long-standing link with and affection for the UK. 35 years ago he worked in the National Health Service and has studied anatomy and physiology at London University. His relationship with Anglia began more than 4 years ago when, under the auspices of a WHO Scholarship, he undertook an extended study visit to the then Anglia Polytechnic. As a result of the relationship which was established he has fostered a close and continuing dialogue and partnership with the Faculty of Health and Social Work and both the Ministry of Health in Cyprus and the Cyprus School of Nursing.

Chris Avraam has a long-standing commitment to the development of the nursing profession. As a result of his vision and his energy, Anglia Polytechnic University has been able to launch in Cyprus a degree programme which will enable nurse tutors and clinical teachers to obtain the BSc in Professional Studies and it is likely that the opportunity to study at degree level will soon be extended to experienced nurse practitioners.

Christoforos Avraam will retire as Director of the School of Nursing in March of 1995 but his influence upon the nursing profession in Cyprus will continue long into the future. The collaboration and the friendship which he has helped to forge between the Health Care community in Cyprus and the academic community at Anglia will also be an enduring one.

It is with great pleasure that the University awards Christoforos Avraam an Honorary Fellowship."
