Reader in Fine Art Contributes to Christian Wolff Monograph

David Ryan, Reader in Fine Art, has recently published a chapter on the important American composer Christian Wolff entitled 'Changing the system: indeterminacy and politics in the early 1970s'. This is the first monograph volume dedicated to the composer, and includes essays by international Wolff scholars. David's essay looks at the shifting political climate in the 1970s and avant-garde music's attempt to grapple with these concerns. It looks at works by Nono, Henze and Cardew, as well as discussing, and comparing, the particularities and continuing significance of Wolff's piece 'Changing the System' (1972/73).

The veteran American composer was present in the UK in 2010 for a series of concerts and a radio broadcast, and also at Anglia Ruskin University for rehearsals of his microexercises (2006) which were performed in the London concert 'Conversations without Cage' in June and featured on Resonance FM Radio - see images (click to enlarge).
