Film Screening: Richard Whitby
With Richard Whitby and Jamie George in conversation
Date: Wednesday 23 March 2011
Time: 14.00
Venue: Ruskin 211
A screening of Richard Whitby's recent video work. Whitby's practice as an artist and writer makes abundant reference to commercial filmmaking, addressing economies, histories, tourism and the fictionalization of politics. In his film Palatul (2010), shots of real stray dogs are mixed with studio shots of puppets and props, and a fictional non-English, subtitled, narration from the architect of a palace - a gross monument to a dictator's megalomania. The story is derived from that of Nicolae Ceaucescu's regime in Romania, where the footage of real stray dogs was shot. Richard Whitby will be in conversation with Jamie George discussing this work and others as part of a research-based, as well as a studio-based art practice.
