The Quest for Otherness:Paul Bowles

A talk by David Ryan

Date:
27 October 2010
Time: 14.00
Venue: Ruskin 211

Paul Bowles was an astonishing writer - most famous for The Sheltering Sky (which was filmed by Bertolucci) - but equally impressive in the concentrated short stories that he wrote throughout his life. This talk will examine the question of identity and the roles that both 'location' and 'event' take in his work, each potentially unravelling a sense of self for Bowles. His work often adopts an 'inhuman' perspective in reading the world and viewing the attempts of human activity, communication or endeavour. It will include sound recordings of Bowles reading some of his shorter work.
