From the Desert to 'Any-Space-whatever': David Reed
A talk by David Ryan
Date: 1 December 2010
Time: 14.00
Venue: Ruskin 211
David Reed is an artist based in New York, whose abstract paintings seemed to strike a chord in the early 1990s - both blatantly synthetic and artificial, they appeared to invert the logic of abstract expressionist painting and re-present it for a post-Warhol generation. This talk will take the form of a case study of Reeds' development from his early paintings that explore the space of the desert landscape, through to his analysis of the brushstroke, up to the large 'cinemascope' paintings for which he is best known.
David Ryan has been in dialogue with David Reed since the mid nineties, featuring him in his book Talking Painting, and this presentation will be a chance to, metaphorically, enter the workshop of a current working artist, including rare examples of studies, early work, and current work-in-progress.
