'Creativity or Theft?'
A discussion of current debates on intellectual property in the visual arts
Date: Wednesday 9 March 2011
Time: 14.00
Venue: Ruskin 211
Benet Spencer will discuss current debates on intellectual property in relation to Fine Art practice. We will look at the origins of intellectual property, including the moral justifications of Locke and Hegel, and consider the implications of 'Droit de Suite', or Artist's Resale Rights, and the significance of Jean-Francois Millet to the royalties artists now receive. Key developments such as the move from analogue and digital technology will be examined, including its effect on a range of creative industries. Recent landmark cases involving Appropriation artists such as Richard Prince and Glenn Brown will be considered, to highlight how the explosion of the international contemporary art market has changed the way intellectual property rights are perceived and acted upon.
