This talk is a response to some current abstract painting exhibitions (the Indiscipline of Painting at Tate St Ives and Warwick Arts Centre; Abstraction at Laure Genillard, London and 'Ha Ha What Does This Represent?' at Standpoint Gallery, London).Taking Ad Reinhardt as a starting point, it will look at the development of abstraction within modernism and the continuing questions around abstraction and representation within recent contexts.
