Fine Art research at Cambridge School of Art is marked by diverse practices, including traditional text-based publications, exhibitions, curating, and also performance based work. Three main areas (which also overlap) are:

a) contemporary painting and its related issues
b) installation, objects, and the virtual
c) interdisciplinary work with moving image, sound and music.

Run by David Ryan, Reader in Fine Art, the Fine Art Research Unit has contributions by all current staff and research students. A series of FARU talks and seminars are held on a monthly basis, which invite specialist speakers as well as provide a platform for the group to exchange ideas.

In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, RAE 2008, five subjects within the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences were rated as having 'internationally excellent' research and four subject areas as having 'world-leading' research. English and History were among the top-rated departments in the country.
