Waste and recycling

We are committed to reducing the amount of waste we send to landfill by reusing, recycling or converting waste to fuel to generate energy. Recycling reduces demand on raw materials and energy, pressure on landfill sites and the amount of methane released into the atmosphere, a potent greenhouse gas. If you want to contribute further, the best option is to reduce the amount of waste you produce in the first place!

We have streamlined our recycling systems on campus as part of our strategy to increase the volume of recycled waste. In early 2009 we introduced the 'Bin the Bin' campaign across the university in which we replaced individual under desk bins with centralised communal office recycling bins to ensure waste is correctly segregated for recycling.

Our 'A to Z Recycling Guides for Staff' and 'A to Z Recycling Guides for Students' will help you dispose of your waste correctly, with information on recyclable items and which bin is which. Please take care with your recycling as incorrect items can result in the whole collection, very inefficiently, being sent to landfill.

We have introduced reusable travel mugs for sale in our Chelmsford and Cambridge restaurants. We dispose of approximately 620,000 disposable cups per year, or 2,600 cups per day at Anglia Ruskin University. Over a year this produces around 11 tonnes of waste! The mugs are made from 100% recyclable material and every time you use your reusable mug we will give you 10p off each medium sized hot drink! (Discount applied until 31 December 2010).

For more information about our legal requirements regarding waste, please see our Waste Management Guide. Breaches of our legal obligations could lead to prosecution of individuals, organisations, or both depending on the circumstances.
