Sustainable buildings
We have been taking significant steps to improve the energy efficiency on all our campuses. Through an ambitious redevelopment programme we are replacing our older, less efficient, building stock with more energy efficient buildings. We have installed sub-metering across our estate, to understand where our energy waste occurs, and are beginning to install movement sensor lighting, energy efficient hand dryers and dual flush toilets.
In addition we have participated in the Carbon Trust's Higher Education Carbon Management (HECM) programme, which has enabled us to develop a 'road map' to improving our energy efficiency and reducing our carbon emissions.
All our new buildings and renovations are constructed using the Building Research Establishments Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM). This addresses the large number of sustainability factors to be taken into account with development and renovation, and enable developers and designers to prove the environmental credentials of their buildings.
