Bridging art and culture with science and technology

Touching Sound

The Touching Sound project is concerned with developing digital technology systems to enhance mediated interaction in a cultural context. Initially this project has developed new musical instruments for use in Music Therapy applications, allowing a therapist to engage on a heightened level with a patient, such as an autistic child.

The digital instrument, known as a Generic Interface for Socio-Musical Orientation (GISMO) allows new therapeutic opportunities which are not provided by conventional instruments. Furthermore the recording of user data and the opportunity for remote therapy sessions bring major benefits.

The Golden Window

The Golden Window project uses artistic film and documentary techniques to capture lifesaving inductive cooling procedures carried out at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, which prevent the body from pursuing the 'death pathway' in trauma victims.

This project takes the form of 'creative communication', implementing artistic and creative digital methods to deliver a scientific message. The developed resources also form a database of archived trauma case studies which allow the audience to engage with an interactive documentary at their own preferred level of scientific detail.

Lagoglyph Sound System

CoDE has collaborated with Chicago-based artist Eduardo Kac to develop a unique interactive painting using conductive ink provided by Bare Conductive (London, UK), electronics hardware provided by ARM (Cambridge, UK) and incorporating vocalisations by the renowned choir Mediaeval Baebes (London, UK).

The painting invites a viewer to touch the artwork, generating conductive signals. These signals are sampled by the digital electronic system and trigger vocal sounds which are emitted through loudspeakers mounted in the picture frame.
