2nd annual Cambridge Festival of Illustration draws in the crowds

The second Cambridge Festival of Illustration kicked off on 5 November 2012 with the unveiling of four 60x40 inch illustrated panels designed by recent graduates of Cambridge School of Art's MA Children's Book Illustration course.

Lining the entrance to Children's at Heffers, the panels marked the start of this year's collaboration between Heffers Bookshop and the Centre for Children's Book Studies. The four graduates, Marta Altés, Elys Dolan, Matty Long and Rebecca Palmer, who are all making their mark on the international publishing scene, relished the opportunity to work for such large-scale reproduction.

The week continued with a joint book launch for three graduates: Marta Altés (again), Jenni Desmond and Birgitta Sif, whose new picturebooks are published by MacMillan, Blue Apple and Walker Books respectively. Next up was a lecture and book signing by one of the most revered artists working in children's publishing today, Beatrice Alemagna. The Italian, Paris-based author-illustrator spoke to a huge audience of students and members of the public in our university's new 400 seat lecture theatre about her background and working ethos.

Recent Children's Laureate, Anthony Browne, was in the same theatre the following evening, looking back at his career - and forward to new projects. Friday evening saw our own James Mayhew, million-selling creator of the Katie books, in conversation with Professor Martin Salisbury at Heffers Bookshop, with a packed audience of students, children and members of the public.

Finally, Saturday morning at the bookshop saw much published MA graduates, Nicola Killen and Marion Lindsay run a lively art workshop for a teeming mass of children.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone involved with making this second Festival of Illustration an even bigger success than last year's.
