'Children's Picturebooks' shortlisted for Academic Book Award 2013

A collaborative publication by Anglia Ruskin's MA Children's Book Illustration Course Leader Professor Martin Salisbury and Dr Morag Styles of the University of Cambridge has been selected for the shortlist of the UKLA Academic Book Awards 2013.

MA Children's Book Illustration student wins national design award

The winners of the John Smiths Design awards have been announced. The first prize of £1000 went to Michal Shalev. Michal, from Israel, is a first year full-time student.

Michal wins £1000, an internship at John Smith partners Go Stationery and the opportunity to see her design on the 2013 range of stationery displayed in John Smith's campus shops.

Anastasia Rudaya, a student on our BA (Hons) Illustration course, won a joint second prize of £250.






MA Children's Book Illustration graduate exhibits in Singapore

Congratulations to Lee Kow Fong, 2010 graduate of our MA course, who has just completed a stunning exhibition, 'The Colour of Silence', at The Arts House in his native Singapore, during March 2013. Since graduating, Kow Fong (aka Ah Guo) has also gone on to have several picturebooks published.

Jo reaches Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2013 shortlist

Congratulations to MA Children's Book Illustration graduate Jo Empsom, who reached the shortlist of the Waterstones Children's Book Prize 2013 with her book Rabbityness (Child's Play, 2012).

Leverhulme Lectures 2013

A series of lectures with Jack Zipes (Professor Emeritus, German & Comparative Literature, University of Minnesota and Leverhulme Visiting Professor, Anglia Ruskin University)

Jack Zipes is an eminent scholar within the field of children's literature and especially in the study of fairy tales and folk tales. In addition to his scholarly work, he is an active story teller in schools and has worked with children's theatres in Europe and the United States.

Rising stars to shine at Ruskin Gallery

The work of Anglia Ruskin University's MA Children's Book Illustration students will be showcased in a special exhibition at Ruskin Gallery from 27 February to 14 March.

In a year that has seen the internationally-renowned course shortlisted for a Times Higher Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts, several of the 40 graduating students have already been snapped up by publishers.

Salon du Livre et de la Presse Jeunesse, Montreuil 2013

From 30 November to 3 December 2012, Professor Martin Salisbury and a group of MA Children's Book Illustration and PhD students visited the Montreuil Children's Book Fair in Paris. The visit was at the invitation of the salon organizers, who made available 2000 Euros in European Commission funding to the Centre for Children's Book Studies to facilitate it.

2nd annual Cambridge Festival of Illustration draws in the crowds

The second Cambridge Festival of Illustration kicked off on 5 November 2012 with the unveiling of four 60x40 inch illustrated panels designed by recent graduates of Cambridge School of Art's MA Children's Book Illustration course.

Lining the entrance to Children's at Heffers, the panels marked the start of this year's collaboration between Heffers Bookshop and the Centre for Children's Book Studies at Anglia Ruskin University.

More awards success for MA Children's Book Illustration

We're pleased to announce news of further recognition for graduates of our MA Children's Book Illustration degree - and some of the teaching staff as well.

Rebecca Patterson, who graduated from the course in 2012, has won the 6-and-under category in the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2012 for her book My Big Shouting Day.

Dancing Princesses finally take centre stage

A painstaking project to publish a children's book produced over 60 years ago is nearing completion.

The edition of the Brothers Grimm's The Twelve Dancing Princesses, beautifully designed and illustrated by Sheila Robinson in the late 1940s, has lived in the Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden for a number of years since being donated by Robinson's daughter, artist Chloe Cheese.

2nd annual Cambridge Festival of Illustration


The MA Children's Book Illustration course at Cambridge School of Art is once again teaming up with Heffers Bookshop to stage the Cambridge Festival of Illustration. The festival runs from 5-10 November and will feature talks, book signings and workshops from leading international artists in the fields.

MA Children's Book Illustration graduate Marta Altés has won a silver medal in the 2012 Moonbeam Children's Book Awards for her picturebook No!.

What Katie Did Next: A narrative journey through art and culture

The million-selling author-illustrator and resident tutor on the MA Children's Book Illustration course at Cambridge School of Art discusses his work introducing children to the visual and performing arts through sequential narrative art.

All staff and students welcome, but places are limited so will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book your place please email Louise Taylor.

This event is part of the Childhood and Youth Research Institute's seminar series, which will showcase the work of internal and external speakers researching in the areas of childhood and youth, and will alternate between the Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses.

Martin Salisbury interviewed by Vogue Bambini

CCBS Director Professor Martin Salisbury was recently interviewed by fashion magazine Vogue Bambini. The magazine - an Italian-language offshoot of Vogue aimed at a younger audience - caught up with Martin at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in March 2012, where he was displaying work by students on the MA Children's Book Illustration course.
