AHRC funded studentships

Anglia Ruskin University has received an AHRC Block Grant Partnership Capacity Building award for 2011-13.

Applications for MA studentships are invited for our MA Children's Book Illustration, MA Publishing and PhD English Literature courses.

Studentships cover academic fees at the UK Research Council rate and a maintenance grant. These studentships are available from September 2013. The closing date is 20 May 2013.


AHRC PhD Studentship in English Literature

The PhD studentship in the Department of English, Communication, Film and Media is available for any period of English literature (post 1500), English language or Creative Writing. We would particularly welcome applications in the fields of Renaissance, Victorian and contemporary literature, as well as children's literature and science fiction.

AHRC MA Studentship in Publishing

The MA Publishing studentship will enable one student to take our highly successful course, designed to prepare candidates for their first job in the publishing industry (with a 100% success rate in sending graduates into full-time paid employment within six months of completing the course). The course trains students in all areas of the trade, from editorial to sales and marketing, and is very industry-focused, with masterclasses led by industry professionals. Students are also able to take optional key skills short courses alongside their core modules, as well as undertake internships at top publishing houses such as Bloomsbury, HarperCollins and Cambridge University Press.

To apply for the bursary, please send a CV and covering letter to Dr Leah Tether, including an explanation of a) your interest in the publishing industry and b) why you would like to take an MA in Publishing specifically at Anglia Ruskin University. Applicants should also be in receipt of an offer of a place for the MA Publishing at Anglia Ruskin University before applying for the bursary. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview.


AHRC MA Studentship in Children's Book Illustration

The MA Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge School of Art is a world-renowned course, which currently has students enrolled from twenty-seven countries. Graduates of this course are among the leading award winners in the children's publishing industry annually.

This AHRC bursary will be awarded to an applicant who has been offered a place on the course, whose portfolio and previous academic achievement are deemed to demonstrate outstanding potential in the field. To apply for this bursary, check AHRC eligibility criteria and, if eligible, send a low-resolution PDF of a maximum of twelve examples of your visual work, along with a CV and personal statement in support of your application to Professor Martin Salisbury.


MA Publishing Funding

  1. The Cambridge University Press Bursary Scheme 2013 - for offer holders only.
Consists of a £1,200 reduction on tuition fees for the academic year 2013/14.

The bursary is available to:
  • Holders of unconditional or conditional offer for the full-time MA Publishing at Anglia Ruskin University.
Candidates must:
  • begin their course in September 2013 or have started in January 2013
  • apply through the normal application process
  • be offered a place and accept that offer by 26 July 2013

Details of how to apply will be made available to new students during Welcome week in September.

Stationers' Company crest
  1. The Stationers' Foundation University Bursary Scheme 2013
Includes a bursary of £6,000 and the opportunity to receive mentoring from an appropriate Stationer during the period of their studies.

On successful completion of the Masters programme the award winners will be presented with the Freedom of the Stationers' Company and it is expected that they will participate in the life of the company. Dispensation for payment of the annual membership fee will be given for the following three years.

The Bursary is available to:
  • Holders of unconditional or conditional offer for the MA Publishing at Anglia Ruskin University.
  • Candidates must:
  • normally be under 25 on 1st September 2013*
  • resident in the UK and classified as paying UK tuition fees
  • begin their course in September 2013 or have started in January 2013
  • apply through the normal application process
  • be offered a place and accept that offer by 10 June 2013
  • not be in receipt of another major award (e.g. an AHRC award)

* If you are between 25 and 30 and wish to apply, please discuss your application with the Course Leader, Leah Tether.

The application form must be supported by two references, one academic and one personal from someone of standing who can support the financial statements made in the application.

Short-listing will take place based on the following criteria:
  • Academic merit
  • Financial need
  • The quality of the application

The final decision will be based on performance at the interview at Stationers' Hall. Candidates will have the opportunity to make a presentation (maximum of 10 minutes) in support of their application and show examples of their work, if relevant. The interview panel will be made up of at least two Foundation Trustees and the course leader.

Final decisions will be communicated to the candidates in the second week of July. The bursary funds will be transferred to each university in early September and then passed on to each award winner after the course fees have been deducted (if appropriate).

There will also be an Awards Ceremony at Stationers' Hall in October at which all the award winners and representatives from each university will be present. It is essential that award winners are able to attend this event

The selection panel's judgement is final and no correspondence whatsoever will be entered into concerning the decision.
