In intercultural communication, critical incidents are situations in which the communication between people of different cultural backgrounds breaks down or leads to misunderstandings. We can use these critical incidents to develop our ability to see interaction situations from the perspectives of different cultures and to understand the factors involved in intercultural communication.
This lecture will sketch the background to the concept, examine some critical incidents in meetings across cultures and finally look at examples of critical incidents in the field of advertising.
