VERU welcomes visiting professors from San Francisco and Oxford

Our Vision and Eye Research Unit (VERU) recently had the pleasure of welcoming two distinguished guest speakers to our Cambridge campus for the Symposium event that took place on the 23 March.

Dr Susan Chung, Associate of Optometry and Vision Science at the Berkley University, California gave a talk entitled 'Critical Features for Face Perception in the Presence of Central Vision Loss'. Susan's talk summarised the findings of a series of recent psychological studies into the critical 'features' used in recognition and perception of facial expressions and explained how these findings could be used to help develop an effective image enhancement algorithm that could improve the ability of people with central vision loss to see faces.

Professor Anthony Bron from the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford presented a talk entitled 'A solute Gradient in the Tear Miniscus: A Hypothesis to Explain Pathophysiological Events at the Lid Margin'. Anthony gave an excellent overview and shared new data of how solute gradients in the tear meniscus were generated by evaporation and capillary flow and their subsequent pathophysiological effects on the eye.

Director of VERU Professor Shahina Pardhan commented on the visit "We've been delighted to welcome Susan and Anthony, who are both distinguished and respected experts in their fields. That they've chosen to visit and share their research findings with us reflects the excellent work already carried out within VERU and esteem with which we are held in the wider vision research community".
