The symposium, which took place on Wednesday 18th April in the Fisher Building at St John's College, Cambridge, built on the success of last year and was well-attended by vision scientists and professionals from across the UK.

The theme of this year's symposium was "Cambridge ophthalmology debates on practice trends in cornea and cataract surgery in UK". Proceedings were organised and chaired by Professor Madhavan Rajan, a senior member of our Vision and Eye Research Unit (VERU) and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. The symposium was generously sponsored by Bausch and Lomb Pharma UK. The proceeds of the conference were kindly donated to Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, to support Corneal research at VERU.

This years programme of debates were given by a wide range of distinguished vision experts from across the UK and abroad, highlights included:

VERU Visiting Professor Anthony Bron, who gave a well-received talk on "Meibomian gland dysfunction"

Professor Stephen Kaye from the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, who presented on "Corneal transplant immunology in tolerance and rejection".

Dr Rita Menucci, from the Department of Oto-Neuro-Opthalmological Surgical Sciences in Florence, Italy, who delivered an informative guest lecture, entitled "Corneal crosslinking - the origin, development and progress"

Mr Wagih Aclimandos from King's College Hospital, London, whose lecture entitled "Paediatric cataract surgery - What and what not to do" rounded out proceedings.

As well as providing insights into the latest trends in cornea and cataract surgery and research, this year's symposium provided delegates with an invaluable opportunity to network. Speaking of the event, Professor Madhavan Rajan commented, "the symposium provided an unique opportunity to discuss latest clinical trends in cornea and cataract surgery with an aim to improve clinical standards and dissipate latest research knowledge, both at a regional and national level.
