Faculty faces "Take-Over" attempt by school pupils!
Each year one of our local schools, with which our University enjoys a strong bond, Jack Hunt School in Peterborough, runs what they call a "Take-Over" day. This event sees students from across the school getting involved in a wide range of work experience type activities, both in and out of school. Jointly coordinated by the Science and Technology Administration team and the Outreach and Recruitment team, Friday 24-02-12 saw two Jack Hunt pupils, Zeb and Abdul, arrive on campus for a busy day of technology oriented "Take-Over".
There is no better way to explain it further than in Zeb and Abdul's own words, below are some highlights from the feedback they sent back to the department following their day on campus with us:

"At the start of the day we met the staff in the admin office and Iliana gave us a brief summary on how the admin office works and how they keep all of the student's records.
After that we visited forensic science and got to see various machinery and microscopes, which help students identify different substances, which they find in a crime scene. We found this absolutely fascinating.
Then we were shown around the computing and technology department by Chris Holmes. We were shown forensic computing teams, whose jobs are to hack into the suspect's computers and find suspicious files, this was very exciting to see, as it was very CSI like. After that we were shown how 3D games and animations are made. Being gamers ourselves, to see how video games are made was awesome!
After lunch we had a chance to meet Dr Sylvia Cirstea who answered many of our questions on teaching and mathematics in university. She kindly let us attend one of her analytical essentials lectures on differentiation; this was a great opportunity to see classes and lectures in action.
We then got to see the University Eye Clinic. We found out that this was a regular clinic which people can visit and be tested by 3rd year students; this was all very surprising as you would never expect an optician's clinic in the middle of a University. We were shown all the hi-tech machinery which was used to test the patients and were even given a chance to see our eyes in 3D! It was all very exciting!
Lastly we were given a tour of the psychology department and the audio studios. The psychology department was very cool as we got a chance to use some software and mind-puzzles. We also got a chance to visit the audio studios and see students recording music, using both analogue and digital recording devices in the sound proof rooms, all of which were as good as any professional studio.
At the end of the day we took all of our stuff as well as the goodie bags (which the staff kindly gifted us with) and we headed home, very satisfied and excited about going to university in the future. Overall, it was a marvellous experience and both of us a very grateful for the opportunity. Thanks to all staff and lecturers who supervised us on the day."

Iliana Calambokis from the Faculty of Science & Technology Admin team, who helped host the pupils, commented; "We had the pleasure to welcome Zeb and Abdul in our Faculty and were happy to hear that they had a lovely and constructive day with us. They were both very enthusiastic and showed true interest in the activities and the work done in our Faculty and especially in the Department of Computing and Technology. We wish them the best and we hope to have them with us soon as our students."
