New University Eye Clinic construction underway

Construction is well underway on a new University Eye Clinic on the Cambridge campus, which is due to open in January 2013.

The development will provide a permanent home on our campus for the University Eye Clinic, which is currently housed in a temporary building.

The new building will be spread over two floors, and will home clinics for extensive private eye tests, NHS sight tests, contact lens fitting and aftercare, low vision assessments, visual stress assessments and supplementary tests including dilations and fundus photography, 3D retinal imaging, and screening for glaucoma. There will also be space for research and a 30-seat room for teaching and presentations.

Dr Peter Allen, Director of Clinics, said:

"The new building will be an excellent addition to the Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences. It will be equipped with state of the art equipment and will enhance both student and patient experience. We can't wait for it to open"

The clinic enables undergraduates on Optometry and Ophthalmic Dispensing courses to gain essential clinical experience, along with providing a high level of optical care to the local community.
