Daryl's PhD success takes him to Malaysia

The Faculty of Science and Technology would like to offer congratulations to Daryl Tabrett, who has recently completed his PhD within our Department of Vision and Hearing Sciences. Daryl began his project, entitled "Factors influencing self-reported visual function of the visually impaired" in October 2007, and his PhD was awarded in February of this year.

Daryl's research has focused on the visual and non-visual aspects that influence the perceptions and self-reports of vision of the visually impaired and has been funded by a College of Optometrists' Research Scholarship. Daryl said of his success "I am very happy to have gained my PhD. Although challenging, the last three and a bit years have also been very enjoyable. The findings of the research will help improve the understanding of an important area of low vision research".

Daryl also recently spoke, alongside his PhD supervisor Dr Keziah Latham at the 10th International Conference on Low Vision in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the conference taking place between the 20th and 24th February Daryl gave a talk entitled "Factors influencing self-reported visual function in the visually impaired" and also presented a poster "Evaluation of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) in the visually impaired using Rasch analysis". Keziah gave two talks; "Reading with and without Low Vision Aids", and an invited presentation "Reading medicine labels with Impaired Vision" and commented "Vision 2011 was an excellent meeting, with much to learn on offer that will impact on future research and teaching in low vision. It was particularly gratifying for Anglia Ruskin to be so well represented at the meeting, reflecting our strength in research in low vision within Vision & Hearing Sciences and the Vision & Eye Research Unit".
