Qualifications

Dr Richard Calver graduated from City University in 1994, with an Honours degree in Optometry, and attained membership of the College of Optometrists in 1995. Following a further year practising as an optometrist in London, he moved to the University of Bradford to undertake postgraduate research under the supervision of Dr Mike Cox. His thesis, entitled "Measurements of the human ocular wavefront aberration with the crossed-cylinder aberroscope," was submitted in January 2000 and he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy soon after. This was followed by a period as post-doctoral research associate with Dr Srimant Tripathy at the same university. In September 2000, Richard was appointed to his current position of Senior Lecturer in Optometry at Anglia Ruskin University.

As well as his interests in vision science, Richard is also interested in the history and philosophy of science and medicine, and in 2007 received the degree of MA in 'Medicine, Science and Society: Historical and Theoretical Perspectives' from Birkbeck, University of London.

Research

  • Measurement of human ocular aberrations
  • Effect of aberrations on visual performance
  • Optical correlates of myopia
Richard was co-winner of the 2011 Bernard Gilmartin OPO Award for the following paper:
