Ellen Carroll

PhD, Brain and Cognition
Ellen Carroll

Looking to the future, I hope to make good use of my time here to learn about the brain and cognition. In the long term I'd like to use this knowledge to help people with brain damage, learning difficulties, or mental health problems. Studying at Anglia has opened up so many possibilities that I'm sure will open many doors in my career. I'd recommend studying here as the department is so friendly and supportive and Cambridge is a great city to live and work in.

Anglia Ruskin is a brilliant, really friendly University. The lecturers have really created a learning environment that makes contact with them easy, they are all involved in research in a variety of fields so a wide knowledge base is available for students.

Before I started at Anglia Ruskin, I thought that the lecturers might be intimidating and hard to approach - I could not have been more wrong! Their skill, dedication and passion for their subject area shines through and it captivates and inspires students.

I knew from attending the open day that I would thrive in the learning environment of this department. The lecturers I met were incredibly personable, and it was clear that they are really invested in your academic performance as an individual. I was also keen to take the opportunity to study in such a beautiful and academic city.

Anja Helen Lindberg

BSc (Hons) Psychology 2006 - 2009

I believe I have received tremendous help from teachers and staff. We have some great technicians in the Psychology department and all of the teachers are available to give advice and support (both regarding academic work but also on career plans and postgraduate study). I can really see the dramatic improvement that has occurred both in my academic writing style but also my ability to be critical and to have a strong argument flowing through my reports.

Jane Nixon

BSc (Hons) Psychology 2005 - 2008

My tutor Dr Catherine Jansson was amazing, and with her energy she spurred me on, even during stressful points. The course covered every aspect of psychology, which helped me to make decisions about my future career. My dissertation project really allowed me to explore and use different equipments - the Psychology labs are brilliant. Now I am able to say I researched this, or found that, which looks really good on my CV.
I would definitely recommend the Psychology degree. I loved every second of this course - it's a shame the three years went by so quickly.

When I first joined Anglia I wasn't completely sure about what avenue of psychology I wanted to explore the most. Through my time here I have found that research is incredibly interesting, and potentially the most crucial area within psychology. From my experiences here I have found a clear direction to take and know exactly how I want to further my growth and learning.

I found the workload to be heavy, but fair, and I also liked there being several assignments rather than just one or two, as I made a couple of mistakes in earlier assignments which I was then able to rectify and greatly improve upon in later assignments, leading to a much better mark than I would have achieved otherwise.

I particularly enjoyed being free to use the available neuroimaging equipment including the EEG cap and the eye tracker, which taught us the theory behind each piece of equipment, as well as how best to use it. I enjoyed my time at Anglia a lot, I have grown through my study there and feel much more prepared for a career where I can fully make use of the research skills gained through the course.

I remember well the first week of lectures. I recall thinking that I'll never be bored again. Since then I have been baffled and enlightened, terrified and fearless, really insecure and really self-confident - but never once bored.

I am now of retirement age, but I still won't be bored. January 2013 will see me starting a Masters Degree, at Anglia, in Cognitive and Clinical Neuroscience.

I would recommend studying in the Psychology Department at Anglia Ruskin University to anyone willing to discover more about human and animal behaviour. Whatever a person's age or background, Psychology is an endlessly fascinating area of science to study and investigate.
