• Neuropsychological/neuroimaging studies of object processing and conceptual knowledge

My primary focus is on the representation of meaning in the brain, particularly with respect to the role of anteromedial temporal subregions (including the perirhinal cortex) in fine-grained object and conceptual level processing.

• The neural bases of learning and memory

My focus is on the theoretical basis of retrograde amnesia, targeting the conflicting predictions of consolidation, reconsolidation, and multiple trace theories of remote memory retrieval. My most recent work indicates that a widely distributed network of regions underlies the retrieval of past memories, and that the extent of lateral temporal damage appears to be critical to the emergence of a severe remote memory impairment.

• Cognitive Control and Intelligence

I have been involved in a long term collaborative project exploring the relationship between frontal lobe function, intelligence (Spearman's general factor or 'g') and the effective organisation of goal directed behaviour. Our most recent series of studies suggests that g is not so much reflected by the real time demands of actual task execution, but with the perceived complexity of the whole body of facts, rules and requirements that define the task. Functional neuroimaging work indicates the importance of specific prefrontal and parietal regions in such task modelling functions.
