Biomarker Services

The Department of Psychology's Applied Stress & Health Research Group has expertise in the analysis of saliva for a range of hormones and immunological markers, for example the hormones cortisol & testosterone and the mucosal antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA). The majority of the analyses we run use the sensitive Enzyme Linked Immunsorbent Assay (ELISA) and use specialist robotic equipment (see below).

We can provide assistance with the collection, storage and transport of saliva for analysis as well as the interpretation and analysis of the data

Tecan Genesis Freedom 150/8 automated liquid handler

The Stress and Health Research Group laboratories have a wide range of resources for the storage, safe handling and analysis of saliva samples but the 'heart' of the laboratories is the Tecan Freedom liquid handler.

The Freedom is an open-platform system allowing additional modules and configurations to be added in response to changing needs. Currently the Freedom hardware is configured for its role as a colourmetric/assay system:

(a) 6 low evaporation microplate incubation shaker bays
(b) 9 ambient incubation bays
(c) POS-ID barcode scanner & 'on the fly' bar code scanner
(d) Tecan Columbus 16 channel plate washer
(e) Tecan Infinite F200 microplate reader (incubator, absorption, fluorescence polarity and intensity)

The Freedom automates the analysis process allowing rapid and accurate analysis of saliva samples.
