Why Study Here?
The courses run by the Psychology department are exciting and interesting. We employ several innovative teaching and assessment methods. Typically students have six 1-hour lectures and four 1.5 hour seminars a week, (this does vary across semesters and years).
Our teaching is facilitated by exceptional resources.
In the summer of 2009, we have had two purpose-built teaching rooms constructed for us. Each of these contains 25 PCs loaded with software to assist in our teaching. Additionally, we have nine experimental laboratories built in 2009 with new computer equipment to be used by third year students on the Project Module and by second year students in Research Techniques for Psychology.

We are very keen to help our students beyond their degree.
Our careers tutor (Mike Finlay) is always keen to help students. We keep our students updated with information on seeking further opportunities in Psychology. Mick holds careers talks. Details will be posted on the Department of Psychology noticeboard (3rd floor, Coslett building). We also have a detailed Personal Development Planning scheme run by our PDP tutor (Helen Keyes).
We maintain student-staff ratios at less than 20:1,
in accordance with the requirements for British Psychological Society accreditation of the Single Honours pathway. There are currently around 240 full time equivalent students enrolled on Psychology programmes. All degree programmes are modular, and are delivered across two 12-week teaching semesters.
The students within the Psychology Department are an active and exciting bunch,

Research
All our staff are active researchers and have broad research interests. Our researchers take advantage of our world-class research facilities, such as the EEG Laboratory and the Psychoneuroimmunology Laboratory.
According to the recent RAE, 80% of our research was recognised by the RAE as being international quality in terms of originality, significance and rigour. We have two research groups within the department:
We also run weekly research seminars led by a member of staff. Typically these present some of the most up-to-date research
being conducted within the department or by collaborators. Everyone is welcome to attend these.
