Equine Welfare Consultancy

For RSPCA
  • Generated Horse and Pony Welfare Guidelines for RSPCA, convened and managed a panel of experts to review and settle on the final versions.
  • Commissioned to produce a report on the welfare implications of methods of permanent identification of horse and ponies, including hot branding, freeze marking and microchipping. Involves literature review, stakeholder consultation and behavioural observations during identification procedures. Will be used to inform RSPCA position statement on identification methods concerned.
  • Representation of RSPCA at meetings of bodies such as NEWC (National Equine Welfare Council) and at the Equine Health and Welfare Strategy Meeting.
For NEWC (National Equine Welfare Council)
  • Elected to the Management Board. Anglia Ruskin University is a Full Welfare Member of NEWC.
For World Horse Welfare (WHW)
  • Provided training on behavioural assessment of welfare for Romanian and Italian vets recruited for research on welfare of horses transported for slaughter
  • Contributor to WHW Dossier of Evidence on the welfare of horses transported for slaughter, submitted to the European Parliament. Campaign details available here
