- Director, Animal and Environmental Research Group (AERG)

Teaching
I have been involved in developing the curriculum and teaching whole organism biology and statistics in higher education for over 15 years. I have been particularly involved in developing and teaching animal behaviour and related subjects at Anglia Ruskin University and leading on the development of the 'Biomeasurement' introductory statistics. More recently I have been involved in developing the teaching of GIS especially for students in studying ecology and conservation.Research and Scolarly Activity
I am currently developing my activities in three areas:1. Behaviour, ecology and conservation of animals in East African ecosytems. For example, I am part of a team conducting research on elephants in Mikumi National Park and nearby Udzungwa (Tanzania) looking at their importance as "ecosystem engineers" and their response to a recent resurgence in poaching. Anglia Ruskin University collaborators: Guy Norton, Nick McWilliam, Jody Gunn, Trevor Jones, Leah Collett and Amani Kitegile
2. The use and abuse of statistics in biosciences including the potential role of Generalized Linear Model and other emerging statistical techniques in behaviour and conservation. For example I have recently supervised a PhD to completion which included an assessment of the use of GLM in understanding human wildlife conflict in relation to crop raiding by elephants.
3. Teaching and learning of maths and statistical skills in bioscience students. For example through the NuMBerS and SUMS project and as author of a text book for OUP introducing biosciences for biosciences. Anglia Ruskin University collaborators: Toby Carter, Jacqui McCary and Julian Priddle.
I am currently acting as supervisor or advisor for 6 postgraduates students with a further 9 having completed since 2001.
