Whether your horse breeding programme involves:-
  • in-hand cover breeding valuable Thoroughbreds
  • artificial insemination breeding sports horses
  • paddock breeding native ponies.
If you own or manage a stud your livelihood depends upon the success of your breeding programme.

However, as anyone involved in horse breeding knows, problems can develop which may threaten to diminish income and affect the welfare of the animals in your care.

Do you recognize any of these problems?

Stallions Mares
Aggression Resistance to mounting
Over-excitement Failure to conceive
Lack of libido Failure to show oestrus
Failure to ejaculate

Many owners and handlers report difficulty getting mares in foal due to problems such as these, and often vets can find no underlying physiological cause.

Dr Mark Kennedy of Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom has perfected an approach which enables the analysis of aspects of both stallion and mare behaviour with a view to an increased likelihood of conception taking place.

There can be myriad reasons why mating may fail, including lack of libido on the part of the stallion or stress affecting the mare's willingness to co-operate. However each case is unique and the techniques required to solve the problem will be needed in varying combinations.

Two services are offered

  • A problem-solving service, where Dr Kennedy will attend your stud to investigate the problem. A report following the visit will detail Dr Kennedy's advice on resolving the issue. Follow-up visits may be arranged to assess progress and make any further recommendations required.
  • A complete behavioural audit, which involves a full day's visit observing breeding procedures on your stud. You will be provided with a bespoke report shortly after the visit, detailing Dr Kennedy's findings and recommendations.
Dr Kennedy, a Vice President of the Horse Commission of the European Association for Animal Production, has studied equine behaviour for over fourteen years, and has trained in stallion semen collection procedures. Based in Cambridge, United Kingdom, Dr Kennedy travels to studs world-wide to advise on bloodstock problems for horse breeders.

His services are offered to all those who breed horses, whether for racing, eventing, dressage or pleasure.
