The department currently runs two dive field trips to the Red Sea each year.

The first trip, to Dahab in January, is aimed at teaching those who wish to learn how to dive. The second, to Marsa Shagra in July or August, teaches students how to conduct biological surveys of coral reefs. The latter trip to Marsa Shagra has been designed to immerse you in coral reef ecology, to provide practical experience of relevant survey techniques, and to improve your marine life identification skills. As this field trip requires you to be a qualified diver, it provides an ideal follow on from the January trip where many of our students learn to dive. Together these trips will take you from never having dived before right through to surveying marine life on one of the Red Sea's best reefs.

As a direct follow-on from learning to dive on these trips students have gone on to work on marine conservation projects in the UK and abroad, and have also gone on to gain Dive Master certification, the first professional dive qualification. For further details please see the relevant page for each trip.
