Field Courses
We strongly believe that you should not only hear about things in lectures but also have the opportunity to see and do them. Fieldwork is an essential component of a degree in Zoology and our other pathways in Animal and Environmental Biology.
For most students studying Animal and Environmental Biology courses, there is a compulsory residential field trip to Devon in Semester 4 (as part of the module Practical Biology). There are numerous day and half day field trips to local sites, and short optional field trips to sites such as the Farne Islands or Rum (a Scottish island). The Department will contribute towards the costs of travel and accommodation for compulsory field trips, but students will be expected to meet their own costs for optional field trips. For example, students wanting to go to Rum to see the red deer rut can expect to have to pay around £210 (this includes travel and accommodation, but not food).
Anglia Ruskin University is a member of the Tropical Ecology Society, reflecting a commitment to education, research and conservation in tropical Africa. The module Tropical Ecology and Management includes a two week field trip to East Africa, a compulsory component of the module. Students who wish to take this module may expect to make a substantial contribution, around £1,450. Students sign up in Semester 2 to take this module in Semester 4, with the field trip in June of Year 2.

These trips are currently available - there can be no guarantee that the same trips will be offered in future years. The Department makes a financial contribution to many of the trips, but with residential trips payment is required. This may range from £50+ for UK trips to £1400+ in the case of the field trip to Africa. Some field trips have limits on numbers.
