Life Sciences

In the Department of Life Sciences we've developed a learning environment and courses to give you a balance of both academic theory and practical experience. Our department is divided into two subject areas:

Outstanding study facilities
We've invested heavily in industry-standard equipment for teaching, casework and research purposes and are recognised as having some the best laboratory facilities in the UK, including:
  • A range of high quality, well-equipped laboratories.
  • A full suite of microscope facilities.
  • Human energetic and performance laboratories

Flexible, professional courses
We operate a flexible, modular system that allows you to tailor your course to match your career ambitions, and many of our degrees can be studied part-time.

First-class, research-active staff
You will be taught by a group of highly qualified and enthusiastic staff who have a strong commitment to student development. Our staff are engaged in a wide range of research activities and have links with many external organisations. Our research includes behavioural studies on baboons in Tanzania, environmental investigation into local areas such as Wicken Fen and physiological and pathological responses to extreme endurance exercise.

Opportunities to study abroad

If you choose to study one of our degrees you may have the opportunity to study abroad, as we have partnerships with Marshall University in West Virginia, the University of New Brunswick at Fredericton and the United States Olympic Training Centre, Colorado Springs.

Fieldwork sits at the heart of our Animal and Environmental Biology courses, where students take part in a number of field trips across the UK and around the world. We're also keen to encourage hands-on experience for our sports courses, which could involve coaching a local team or analysing the performance of professional athletes.

Location

All of our courses are located in Cambridge, which is a student-friendly and vibrant city. The Cambridge campus has recently benefited from over £10m in investment. If you would like to look around the campus we welcome you to join us at our next Open Day.

Open days

If you're thinking of studying one of our courses we recommend you join us at our next Open Day. It's the best way for you to see exactly what we have to offer, have a tour of the campus and chat to our teaching staff and students.
