Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering Research Group (ETERG)
The Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering Research Group (ETERG) focuses its research on aspects of electronic systems design and telecommunication engineering. The specific interests include electronic systems modelling and digital controller (FPGA) design, power electronics and renewable energy applications, wireless mobile networking simulation, security, protocols and bandwidth management, wireless networks, wireless fading, modelling and measurements, distributed computing in wireless environments, satellite navigation systems, RF circuit design, active noise cancellation, RF control and security systems. Since 2007, over 20 research students have graduated from ETERG and that has warranted good reputation in the international education and research community in the field of electronic innovation, mobile communication and the security of IT and mobile systems. ETERG is one of the pioneers in wireless mobile security research and integration of TETRA and Ad Hoc mobile networks with all-IP mobility networks.
ETERG has some state-of-art electronic and wireless laboratories which include highly sophisticated test equipment and advanced simulation packages for the whole range of spectrum, where advanced mobile communications tests can be performed for all mobile development generations such as GPRS, 3G, WiMAX, HSPDA and Long Term Evolution (LTE), which is considered the 4th Generation. Research facilities encompass specialist laboratories dedicated to Electronics including: a range of Electronic Design Automation packages, FPGA/DSP/Microprocessor boards, electrical machines and drives test bed, oscilloscopes, solar panels, renewable energy converters and a small wind turbine. Holistic electronic systems modelling and design is performed using packages / software development tools and languages like: Matlab, Simulink, C++, PSIM, Xilinx, Multisim (National Instruments), VHDL, Mentor Graphics C-Synthesiser, OPNET, Handel-C, etc. Facilities for experimental work are available, such as: hardware control platforms (PLDs, FPGAs, DSPs, ARM microprocesor platforms, microcontrollers), photovoltaic panels, power converters, wind turbine, oscilloscopes, measurement / monitoring equipment, cloud computing / electronics test beds (Cisco, HP), state-of-the-art digital media suites and audio recording studios, optical 3D scanner, RF MEMs simulation package Intellisense (Intellisuite 8.7), GSM, 3G (UMTS) and WiMAX mobile network hardware simulators, spectrum analyser and a range of microwave generators.
Dr Sufian Yousef (BSc, MSc, PhD), Principal Lecturer and winner of the Royal Academy of Engineering Award (1999), is the overall Director of ETERG and Chelmsford team leader. Email: (sufian.yousef@anglia.ac.uk)
Dr Silvia Cirstea (BSc, MSc, PhD), Senior Lecturer, is deputy director of ETERG and Cambridge team leader. Email: silvia.cirstea@anglia.ac.uk
