Digital Modelling Research Group (DMRG)

The Digital Modelling Research Group (DMRG) aims to enhance the body of knowledge in digital modelling and design, as well as all aspects of media communication involving sound and vision.

The main areas of interest include image processing, audio analysis and synthesis, internet technologies, video scene reconstruction, spatial and other data visualization, technologies for supporting visually impaired people, mobile device technologies and other media applications, digital electronic controllers, system on chip design, on-line virtual environments, avatar animation and portability, power electronics, renewable energy or hybrid electric vehicle applications. Specialist knowledge is resident in image manipulation, video systems, animation, virtual worlds, gaming, 3-D and 2-D modelling, audio applications, satellite technologies, artificial intelligence, internet technologies, digital electronic systems design and mobile media technology.

Recent / on-going projects include:
  • Holistic modelling of electronic systems and digital controller hardware prototyping,
  • The use of Second Life as a Virtual Learning Environment,
  • Calibration of images from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (Mars Express),
  • Control of Integrated Renewable Energy Systems (CRISTAL, FP6 project sponsored by the European Commission),
  • The application of mobile technology to support visual impairment.

Much of the research is collaborative in nature and includes recent or existing joint ventures with companies (e.g. Fenman Ltd., Herga Electrics Ltd., Exxcom Ltd, iDash Ltd, QuickMap Ltd, Cambridge Recylcing Services Ltd., Goodrich Corporation, Sustainable Technology Solutions Ltd., MIRA Ltd.). The group has access to a range of high-specification workstations, audio-visual and electronics hardware, specialized software for media applications and hardware testing facilities.
