Workpackage 3 - wind (and wave) energy systems

Workpackage three concentrates on wind turbines/generators, power converters and control systems for wind and wave energy systems, integration with other renewables and issues related to connection to the grid.

Objectives

  • Coordination of current research developed by the workpackage participants concerned with modelling and simulation of wind generators and associated power converters, controllers and grid connection systems. Addressed through: organisation of two group visits and the production of individual and joint reports on these topics.
  • Contribution to the development of key enabling technologies (power converters for RES and controllers for integrated systems) for distributed/smart energy networks with high energy efficiency, power quality and security of service, including analysis of needs for transmission systems, advanced power electronic converters and distributed storage systems for network applications. Implicit set up of an European expert group. Addressed through: the production of two workpackage reports as contribution to two general meeting proceedings, the intermediate and the final report to the EC.
  • Enhancing the knowledge and increasing the awareness on sustainable energy systems, both for consortium participants and general public and dissemination of key findings (that are not subject to IP protection) of the exchange visits. Addressed through: production of two conference papers for a special session on renewable energy and organisation of one public event/presentation per group member.
  • Exchange of good practice between the institutions, implicitly contributing to the setup of an expert group, and identification of clear topics for further (joint) research. Addressed through: all the activities.
