Governance, Policy and Planning

Convenor: Dr Samer Bagaeen, School of Environment and Technology, University of Brighton

This track will consider:

  • The implications of institutional fragmentation, multiplication of agencies and complex relationships resulting in the breakdown of established networks.
  • The involvement of non-governmental and voluntary organisations in the planning process.
  • Is there a disparity of powers and responsibilities across the different governmental and non-governmental bodies?
  • The increasing role of market forces in the spatial distribution and private governance of development.
  • Public-private interactions and the production of urban form.
  • The need for a renewed civic engagement building on a strong and active civil society.
  • How can we ensure a more effective and reflective spatial planning and how this may help to build better governance capacity?
Papers addressing these and other similar issues are invited.
