Climate Change, Sustainability and Ecology

Convenor: Peter Wynn, Department of the Built Environment, Anglia Ruskin University

  • Is it better to protect individual species or habitats generally? Are single issue pressure groups, such as those seeking protection for birds, distorting the achievement of a balanced viewpoint?
  • Does it matter whether climate change is driven by human activity or whether it is solely a result of natural processes? Whichever it is, should we still design on the assumption of steady state conditions?
  • Is it possible to reconcile policies for housing density with desires for wildlife corridors and incorporation of sustainable drainage systems? Have we yet found a way of ensuring any plans for such incorporation are future proof?
  • We are encouraged to reuse derelict land: how often have such sites developed their own rich ecology? How often are such sites within areas subject to flooding?
  • Environmental measures recently added about 20% to the cost of a major water supply scheme. Are we prepared to accept the costs associated with protecting the natural environment?
Papers addressing these and similar issues are invited.
