What Do Adult Nurses Study?
Here you will find some examples of the modules studied in the pre-registration adult nursing programme and evaluation of service user involvement in these modules.
Public Health and Primary Care
This module provides students with an understanding of public health. Students have the opportunity to explore public health issues such as smoking, obesity, sexually transmitted diseases, immunisation etc. Students are expected to develop an understanding of the links between public health and disease and to consider the responsibility of individuals, communities, nurses, other health care professionals and the government in promoting health.Students work in community settings to enhance their understanding of community care. They spend time with health care professionals such as community / district nurses, practice nurses, health visitors or specialist teams. Students must also understand the support services available for carers in the community.
Living with Life Limiting Illness
This module focuses on patients? experiences of living with chronic, long term and terminal conditions such as multiple sclerosis, chronic breathing disorders, cancers etc. Students gain an understanding of some of the physical, psychological, social and financial effects that such conditions may have on an individual.Students work in community settings to enhance their understanding of community care. They spend time with health care professionals such as community / district nurses, practice nurses, health visitors or specialist teams. Students must also understand the support services available for carers in the community.

Assessment and Care Planning for the Adult in Hospital
This module supports students in developing the skills of assessing patients when they are admitted to hospital and considering an appropriate plan of care. Students learn to justify their care by establishing the best evidence available to guide this care.Students gain experience in general medical, surgical or care of the elderly settings. Assessment may take place with patients who are admitted for elective care or those who have been hospitalised as a result of an emergency health event. Students are supervised by qualified nursing staff to use appropriate assessment tools and consider the best plan of care for each of their patients.
Diagnostic and Therapeutic Interventions
This module provides students with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of acute illnesses such as diabetes, renal disease and thyroid disorders. Opportunities to develop skills in prioritising and managing patient care are provided through placements in hospital wards. Learning takes place through lectures, group work and time spent in the skills laboratories. The skills sessions for this module are called 'The Patient Journey' and focus on pre and post-operative care with the involvement of service users taking on the role of the patient. Service users are able to give feedback to the students, particularly regarding their communication skills.Nursing the Adult with Acute Care Needs
This module assists students in developing skills required for dealing with patients who are admitted to hospital with acute care needs. A key focus of the module is the recognition of deteriorating patients and the early warning systems that support this. Acute conditions such as chest pain, heart attacks, trauma - e.g fractures, head injuries, abdominal emergencies - e.g. appendicitis, etc and other sudden health events are considered in this module.Students experience nursing patients in acute care environments such as Intensive Care Units, Trauma orthopaedic wards, Accident and Emergency Departments, Operating Theatres etc.
