Sarah Piller Case Study

Sarah Piller

Why did you choose to study at Anglia Ruskin University?
The university was relatively local to my home, and I had heard from a friend who had previously studied there that they enjoyed their student experience and the modern facilities.

What initially attracted you to your course?
The course appealed to me more as a practising Midwife in comparison with other university courses, as the content was very much midwifery-focused.

Which aspects of your course do you enjoy most and why?
I thoroughly enjoyed the first module of the course as it focused around the promotion of normal birth, which is extremely relevant to my current role as a senior midwife working at a birthing centre. The tutor Trudy Stevens helped to ensure that this module was interesting and that each week was varied. She would bring relevant books to the class for us to either consider buying or borrowing, as well as encourage us all to attend external study days that would enhance our knowledge around the topics that we were studying at the time. I also thoroughly enjoyed the optional module of Advanced Communication Skills as it was mainly practical learning - a great deal of skills were learned during the 3-day intensive training that I was able to take back to my work place and apply to my own practice.

Has the course met/exceeded your expectations? If so, how?
Yes, the course was fantastic. I learned a great deal from what the tutors brought to the sessions, as well as from the other students - all of whom were experienced midwives.

Would you recommend your course to others?
Absolutely, without hesitation.

Please tell us about any special features you have benefited from on your course.
I benefited from the practical sessions, being encouraged to learn from fellow students experienced in my own line of work, having to prepare and present research to the class/tutors, and the final major project, which enabled me to carry out a service evaluation of an aspect of work within my own area.

How do you feel that your studies at Anglia Ruskin will help you in your current job?

It will help me carry out research into an area of my own practice, as well as enabling me take back to the workplace all that I learned throughout the modules and practical sessions, feeding back to my own work colleagues and enhancing my own current practice as a midwife.

What are your ambitions/plans for the future, and how do you feel that your course will help you to achieve these?
My MSc qualification will hopefully enable me to move into a management or teaching role in the future.

How do you rate the support offered by both our teaching and support staff?

Excellent. I could not fault the support received from all of the staff - particularly Trudy Stevens who brought a great deal to the sessions that she taught us, and who supported me a great deal when carrying out my final major project.

How do you rate our facilities and resources on offer at our campuses?
Excellent. The facilities were modern and were one of the main reasons for choosing to attend the university in the first place - I was not disappointed. I used to enjoy using the library immensely as it was quiet and private and the quantity of the books available was brilliant in comparison to other universities that I had previously studied at.

How do you find fitting you studies around your outside commitments including work, family etc?
I found it quite challenging, as I was working full time throughout the course, but taking annual leave enabled me to juggle work and home life.

How would you sum up your experience of studying at Anglia Ruskin course so far?
Enjoyable, interesting and memorable - I would like to return to study there again one day in the future.
