Yasmin Sesay case study
Yasmin Sesay
DipHE Operating Department Practice
“I'm Yasmin Sesay and I'm just about to complete my two-year training in the Dip HE Operating Department Practice programme. My placement site is at Newham University Hospital Theatres. Initially, I chose this course as I liked the idea of working in the theatres. During my third month in placement, I realised that I really enjoyed what I was doing. My placements were in the three areas of the operating department: anaesthesia, surgery and recovery, to ensure that I acquired the skills I would need to work when I qualify.
I had great mentors, who gave me lots of support and encouragement during my training. They were patient with me, constantly giving me feedback on my performance. I learned that patients trust us to do our best to look after them so I knew I needed to acquire the knowledge and experience to ensure that this trust was not misplaced. One of the things I really like about this course is that it is practical-based. With hands-on learning it is easier to remember procedures as I get to do them often.
The contents of the modules for this programme are all linked, providing me with the theoretical knowledge I needed to become a competent ODP. In placements, I got to practice what I'd learned during the lectures. This course has exceeded my expectations: from thinking it was a technician role, I've come to realise that it's so much more than that. The job opportunities are wide, both in the UK and abroad. Once I qualify, I intend to work for a NHS trust whilst at the same time topping-up my diploma to a degree qualification. I intend to go on to become an anaesthetic practitioner. The lecturers have been so helpful, giving so much support throughout these two years. As I finish this programme, I can say I've had to work hard to succeed in the course but I've also developed so many new skills, made lots of friends and had so much fun.
