Liz Chapman Case Study (ODP)

Liz Chapman

DipHE Operating Department Practice

Why did you choose to study at Anglia Ruskin University?
Because it provided the best hospitals for my placements.

What initially attracted you to your course?

Patients care. At the end of the course I will be a qualified ODP which will enable me to work in any theatre in hospitals around the country.

Which aspects of your course do you enjoy most and why?
My practice. Patients coming into hospital are anxious and often terrified. It is very rewarding to know that I have helped them through their difficult time.

Has the course met/exceeded your expectations? If so, how?
Absolutely. It is very hard working, but you get to work along side professionals and very highly skilled practitioners that train me to the highest standards.

Would you recommend your course to others?
Without a doubt. If you want to work in theatres and in a patient care environment, then this is the best course to do.

Has your course involved any work placements? If so what was your best experience on placement?
Yes. I am in practice three days a week. There are so many good experiences, I struggle to choose one. Probably helping a cancer patient just before the anaesthetic. Once in recovery she/he woke up and thanked me for my help. I felt that I really made a difference to her/his journey to theatre.

What did you think was the biggest benefit of going on placement?
I get "hands on" experience which is, of course, invaluable. Also I get to meet doctors and professionals who have giving me a wealth of advice.

What was the most challenging experience during your placement?

Preparing a full list for cardiac patients. It is very lengthily and complicated, but the more I do it the more I get used to it and get better at it.

Are you currently employed, if so what is your job title?
I am not employed yet, but my practice placement has offered me a job already once I am qualified.

How do you rate the support offered by both our teaching and support staff?
My personal tutor has always been available for me. This course can be challenging at times not just physically, but also emotionally. I always felt that I can go to him with any problems: academic or personal.

How do you rate our facilities and resources on offer at our campuses?
Very good. Excellent library with lots of books and journals. We also have a skill lab which we use regularly.

How do you find fitting you studies around your outside commitments including work, family etc?

I make time. I am a full time mum as well as a student and it is a balancing act. But I love my course and I have learnt to be very organised.

How would you sum up your experience of studying at Anglia Ruskin course so far?
The best thing I have ever done (of course after having my children!!)
