BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing

Why did you choose to study at Anglia Ruskin University?
I chose Anglia Ruskin because it was close to home and because I felt that it was a good university being around good placement areas like Papworth Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital

What initially attracted you to your course?
Nursing because I'm quite a caring person and I thought I'd be quite good at it. Also because I was really interested in human biology.

Which aspects of your course do you enjoy most and why?
I have enjoyed the placements most, I've had a wide variety and got to experience so much. Also all the friends I've made at the university.

Why would you recommend your course to others?
I would recommend it to others because it is a really enjoyable course, hard work but worth every minute of it. Caring for people is really worthwhile and makes a difference and makes me feel like I've done something good everyday. Definitely the right job.

Has your course involved any work placements? If so how were these useful?
I have had many placements:

  • Laurel and Medical Assessment Unit (MAU) at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. MAU was one of favourite placements so far, I learnt a lot there, I got to spend a day in A&E and go out with the paramedics
  • Health Visitor sector where I went with the Midwife which was really interesting
  • Arthur Rank House the Palliative Care Hospice
  • Transplant Unit and Cardiac Outpatient at Papworth Hospital
  • The Community Placement in the District Nurses where I got to spend time with the practice nurse and the GP

These were all really interesting I got to see and experience many things, including a double lung transplant, going on a donor run to London, palliative care which is a big thing to see and I found it really useful. In the community I got to practice many skills and get one-to-one time to really learn and ask questions. I learnt how to take blood and wound dressings, to name a few.

Are you currently employed, if so what is your job title?
Yes I have a part-time job on the Bank at Papworth hospital as a Healthcare Assistant. Whenever I am free I can tell the hospital and get a shift if they need someone to work. This is really good because I can get more experience in working in a hospital.

What are your ambitions/plans for the future, and how do you feel that your course will help you to achieve these?
My ambitions are to hopefully work in A&E or MAU once I qualify because I like the fast pace and because you need to know about everything. Then after a while of that I feel I would like to specialise as maybe a cardiac nurse or go into the community. The course will help me with these because I will learn the skills I need to know. Also in my elective placement in 3rd year hopefully I will get my 1st choice which is in a big A&E department so I will get a small amount of experience.

How do you rate our facilities and resources on offer at our campuses?
I think the facilities are really good on our campus, the library is good and you can get the books to reference from and information about nearly anything you want to read about. The cafeteria is good lots of choice of food and we have computers we can use.

How would you sum up your experience of studying at Anglia Ruskin course so far?
I am really enjoying university so far, it is good but hard work. But I'm glad I'm doing it as it's lots of great experiences.
