Ghana Visit
A group of Faculty of Health and Social Care students will be heading to Ghana in October for a three week elective placement with the Work the World organisation.
Once the group had made the decision that they wanted to undertake an elective abroad, it was Africa that instantly sprang to mind and from there, research into the matter brought up Work the World who specialise in nursing elective placements and Ghana was chosen.
The girls are hoping to gain experience and insight into the health care facilities of those living in a third world country and how accessible it is for them. The issue of health problems and how they tackle conditions such as malaria and HIV with regards to health promotion will also be looked at. The girls are hopeful that they can aid Ghana, whether it is helping out financially, buying food or helping with public transport.
Working hard at gaining sponsorship for this event, the girls completed a sponsored bike ride from Ely to Fulbourn (approximately 20 miles) to raise money for trip deposits last year. Since then activities held have included a Christmas raffle, bag packing at Marks & Spencers and holding a cake stall. On June 21st they are holding a disco at Papworth Everard conservatory. Tickets cost £6 and are available from Sally 07853196911 or can be bought on the door.
The group has also had three kind donations from Ely Round Table Rotary Club, Cheffins of Ely and the Countess Free Church.
Anyone wishing to donate can make cheques payable to 'Ghana Elective Fund' and send to Sarah Rowlett 3 Trinity Close Ely Cambs CB6 1AX.
