Nutrition and Hydration workshops
24 May 2013
A Nutrition and Hydration workshop run by lecturer Bev Wright has received excellent reviews from healthcare professionals across Essex and Cambridgeshire.
As part of the Faculty's CPD offering the workshop was initially purchased by an Essex Trust to support awareness of issues surrounding nutrition and hydration for the local Trust's health care assistants and support workers. Following on from the initial workshop deliveries another three workshops have taken place across Cambridge and Essex, which now involves both qualified and non-qualified staff.
Since the workshops conception, the Francis report has been published which among its many recommendations highlights the importance of nutrition and hydration in the care of patients. Following on from the Francis report other reports and publications have emerged from BAPEN, the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and the Malnutrition Task Force (MTF).
Conferences looking at malnutrition, nutrition and hydration have also taken place because of the growing problem with malnutrition in this country. Malnutrition affects one in three adults and costs the nation about £13 billion a year.

This workshop has come along at a pivotal time. While there is still austerity there are major concerns for families, children and the elderly in getting adequate nutrition for optimum health. This is an important consideration when they require medical intervention and become patients themselves, where it has been acknowledged as many as 40% of patients entering hospitals are malnourished.
Surprisingly and perhaps more disturbing a massive 70% of patients leaving hospital are malnourished. Hopefully the workshops will go a long way to make hospital and community staff more aware of the importance of nutrition and hydration.
Workshop feedback includes:
- Today's workshop was incredibly interesting, not only to me professionally but also on a personal basis. I will endeavour to include my knowledge from today's workshop into my everyday working role
- The programme was constructive and was well presented. There was a pleasant atmosphere which assisted in learning. Beverley was a very good tutor
- The nutrition and hydration workshop was very helpful and I have gained more knowledge and better details of the nutritional values especially to patients that are in hospital and will share my knowledge with the rest of the ward
- The day was very positive and highlighted areas we can improve as individuals and then put into our practice area
- The presenter was very engaging and made the sessions interesting. She encouraged discussions which made the sessions enjoyable which is a hard task for a Friday afternoon
