Career
I specialised in the management of the adult cardiac patients from 1989 to 2003. I am currently a senior lecturer in the Acute Care Department. I have prepared written and developed two cardiac modules which continue to attract high numbers of post-registration students. I am currently in the process of developing two distance learning cardiac modules for the international market.I am a Research & Scholarship Facilitator. This role involves providing research and scholarly support to staff within the Acute Care department, collaborating with the Director of Research, Head of Departments, Professors, other Departmental Scholarship and Research Facilitators and staff in implementing the Faculty's Scholarship and Research Strategy.
I am the Education Champion for Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. A key function of this role is to foster collaborative working relationships with those functioning and managing clinical areas in the Trust. The Education Champion facilitates a link team of senior lecturers to address practice-based issues raised by the Trust staff and students.
Research Interest
A phenomenology research study exploring patients' experiences of having a heart attack was undertaken as part of my BSc. For my MSc, a descriptive qualitative research was undertaken to evaluate the impact of a cardiac module for post-registration nurses. This study described how a cardiac module had developed nurses' confidence, skills and knowledge, whereas the purchasers were interested in maximising the benefits for the organisation.I am a peer reviewer for the Nursing Standard.
For my PhD research I will be exploring patients, carers and nurses' experiences surrounding the treatment of primary angioplasty for heart attacks. Using narrative inquiry, in-depth interviews will be undertaken with patients and carers within 14 days of the treatment. Nurses will also be interviewed to gain an understanding of factors surrounding the provision of care.
