Badley began as a lecturer in English and General Studies at Kirkby College of Further Education. He then taught philosophy of education in the School of Education, Liverpool Polytechnic. After that he became Principal Lecturer in Education at Anglia focusing on learning and teaching in further and higher education and developing what became the Centre for Learning and Teaching for the university as a whole.He helped create the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) as well as the British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) and was one of its first co-chairs. He has maintained a keen interest in researching a range of issues in higher education and now concentrates mainly on problems connected with academic writing for postgraduates and academic staff. He publishes widely and serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals including Teaching in Higher Education.
Badley was created Professor of Academic Development in 1994 and now works mainly for the Research Support Unit as an Emeritus Professor.
