Postgraduate Public Health

Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Masters level study are available to students with a relevant undergraduate degree or alternatively with appropriate experience and evidence of their ability to study at postgraduate level on a full and part time basis.

The MSc course consists of a research dissertation and four 30 credit modules: which includes Epidemiology and is mapped to the UK Public Health Skills and Career Framework standards in the design of the curriculum which addresses public health skills within both UK and international contexts. You will have your choice of dissertation in your final year. This is a major piece of student-directed work, an in-depth study of a public health topic of particular interest to students, usually related to your own practice.

Module contents draw upon both British and international policy and research. Our close proximity to London allows us to use this metropolis as an exemplar for international comparisons and for the purposes of field trips. Teaching involves tutorials, film, online teaching as well as classroom presentations. We have an extensive library support in terms of books, electronic materials and journals in public health related areas.

The course recognition that public health requires a multi-disciplinary approach which takes account of the wider social, political, and economic factors which influence health. All subject areas are informed by the latest British, European and international health policies and research. Subject leaders are research active, as well as experienced lecturers. Postgraduate Public Health study will equip you to critically evaluate current public health practice and policies, conduct health impact and health needs assessments, and develop strategies for improving health and reducing inequalities, while working collaboratively across the public health arena. The MSc will help, local government, and voluntary sector organisations develop their staff to help protect and promote the public's health. The MSc will help you achieve the professional standards for public health practice and thus will underpin professional development in the field. Learning outcomes for modules have been mapped against the professional standards for public health practice.


Specialist Community Public Health Nursing

There are specialist community public health courses available for qualified nurses at BSc and Masters Level.

These courses provide interpretation of modern public health policy. They develop leadership and evaluative skills relating to collection, and interpretation of public health data, in order that they can pro-actively identify the health needs of individuals, families, groups and communities and work within a clinical governance framework.
