Primary & Public Health
The Department of Primary and Public Health offers an extensive range of courses (degrees) and modules designed to educate and train health and social care students for work in a diverse range of primary, community and public health environments. Our courses are designed to cater for the needs of international students and UK and European primary care and public health professionals.
Whether you are interested in pursuing a foundation degree to develop your knowledge and skills and assist you in your work, or undertake professional training to become a health visitor or midwife or become a specialist by pursuing postgraduate studies such as our MSc Public Health, which is very popular with international students, this department has something to offer you. Our courses are tailored to meet the needs of all healthcare professionals and not only those working in primary and community healthcare settings.
Our courses are designed to offer flexibility and thus place a greater emphasis on work-based and online learning. We maintain excellent links with employers, the local NHS and local authority and other key organisations. We provide work placements and support practice teachers, mentors and students through our Educational Champions and link teams.
We cater for professionals who wish to update their practice, obtain further qualifications, change career pathways, enhance their skills base or participate in debates and discussions to inform policy, practice knowledge and service innovation. Key subject areas include public health, specialist community public health nursing, midwifery, clinical assessment skills, non medical prescribing, contraception and sexual health and palliative care.
We provide a creative and energetic environment for undertaking research that addresses real issues across the full spectrum of public and primary health. To learn more about current projects, visit our research pages.
